The government has announced the launch of the recruitment process for Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia, which has agreed in principle to recruit 10,000 workers from Bangladesh at no cost to them.

Malaysian authorities have also agreed to enlist 338 recruiting agencies from Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment announced the developments in a statement on Thursday.

Malaysia is one of Bangladesh’s major labour markets, employing a large number of Bangladeshi workers for years. After taking office, the current government prioritised reopening labour markets that had been closed or restricted, with particular attention to Malaysia, according to the ministry statement.

Under the latest arrangement, Malaysia has agreed to enlist Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL), the country’s only state-owned recruiting agency, along with 25 private processing or service agencies and 312 recruiting agencies.

The enlisted recruiting agencies will be able to independently contact Malaysian employers, collect job demand letters and recruit workers from Bangladesh, the ministry said.

Based on eligibility criteria set by Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources, the approved agencies will be able to facilitate recruitment, while BOESL and the 25 processing or service agencies will provide administrative support, including assistance with visa and e-visa procedures.

Once the necessary procedures in Malaysia are completed, the relevant recruiting agencies will take the subsequent steps in accordance with Bangladesh’s laws and regulations.

Each approved recruiting agency will be able to obtain clearance for workers from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) under its own licence. BOESL and the 25 enlisted processing or service agencies will be authorised to issue no-objection certificates to the approved agencies for this purpose.

The ministry said the government was committed to reducing migration costs and ensuring transparency in recruitment, stressing that new employment opportunities must not place excessive financial burdens on workers.

Recruiting agencies have been urged to comply with national laws and protect the interests of prospective migrant workers.
