UNHCR urged to remain engaged with Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation

Bangladesh has requested UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, to continue its engagement with the government of Myanmar towards creating conducive environment in the Rakhine State to ensure safe and sustainable return of the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland.   State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam made the request during his meeting with Regional Representative of UNHCR James Lynch held at the Parliament on Tuesday.   The UNHCR representative briefed the State Minister about the recently signed tripartite MoU by Myanmar with UNHCR and UNDP.   This MoU provides a framework for further cooperation between Myanmar and the UN (UNHCR and UNDP) towards creating conditions/facilities for the returnee Rohingyas in Myanmar including assisting their resettlement and reintegration.   Bangladesh has already engaged UNHCR in the repatriation by signing two MoUs of cooperation.
