An Artist’s Endeavour To View Dhaka From A Different Perspective

A solo art exhibition by Kuntal Barai titled ‘Displaced in Dhaka’ was inaugurated by academician and an urban expert Prof. Nazrul Islam with Giusepee Semenza, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Italy in Dhaka, Yeasha Sobhan, director, Bashundhara Group, Shahjahan Ahmed Bikash, associate professor and chairperson, Faculty of Fine Arts, UODA and art critic Mustafa Jaman in attendance at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka on May 04, 2018.

Through this exhibition the artist has endeavored to portray the real situation of Dhaka city.

A number of studies state that Dhaka has reached the peak of criticality with its unplanned growth. Overpopulation, traffic congestion, development sprees, and insanitary conditions have reached an all-time high. Where for a select few who can bear the brunt of a megalopolis gone haywire, Dhaka is a necessary evil, but the majority of Dhaka dwellers do not find Dhaka a safe haven anymore. One of the oldest urban centers in the region, it has became unmanageably chaotic in the last two decades. Still Kuntal Barai finds different ways to celebrate his daily encounters with places and people. Total 7 series in different titles are featuring more than 100 paintings in acrylic, mixed media and drawing.

Kutal Barai completed his B.F.A and M.F.A from the Painting Department of University of Development Alternative. He has attended more than twenty group exhibitions at home and abroad. He was awarded the 'Honorable Award' for the 17th Asian Art Biennale by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The exhibition will close on May 19, 2018.
