A day into the withdrawal of a strike enforced by a section of Ruet students, teachers started boycotting classes today demanding punishment of those who confined them for around 24 hours starting from 2pm on Saturday.
Teachers will boycott classes and exams from Monday until the students who protested are punished, said the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) Teacher’s Association President Nirendranath Mustafi.
Earlier, a group of students staged a demonstration in front of the VC office confining Vice Chancellor, 15 teachers and deans of different faculties inside the office demanding to scrape the ‘33 Credit System’ from 2pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday.
An ‘emergency meeting’ of the Academic Council accepted the students’ demands on Sunday, bringing an end to the siege.
According to Ruet sources, the authority introduced the “33 Credit System” in 2013, where a student has to get 33 out of 40 credits in examination. Upon failing to do so, he or she will not be allowed to move up to the next session and have to retake the whole year again.
