7 March: Struggle this time is for independence

Today (Tuesday) is March 7, 2016. Historic 7th March is a red-letter day in our national history.

On this day, 45 years ago, in 1971 the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had delivered a historic speech at the Ramna Race Course Ground  (now Suhrawardy Udyan) asking  the people to prepare for armed struggle for the liberation of the country. Much before the declaration of independence of Bangladesh in the early hours of March 26, Bangabandhu on March 7 declared: 'The struggle this time is for our emancipation, the struggle this time is for independence'.

This assertion of Bangabandhu was the first message to the people from their elected leader to build up 'fortress at every house' and to 'combat the enemies with whatever you have near your hands'. Bangabandhu also asked the people to continue the struggle for independence 'even if I am unable to issue orders and even if my colleagues also are not available'. The message carried the first ever clear instruction from Bangabandhu to the people to get prepared for taking up arms to free the mother land.

Bangabandhu's speech of 7th March came in the wake of abrupt postponement by President Yahya Khan on March 1 of the inaugural session of the Pakistan  National Assembly (Parliament) scheduled from March 3 in Dhaka and the launching of the non-cooperation movement by him (Bangabandhu) in protest. This address was the culmination of the Banglaees' struggle for self-determination into the struggle for independence. The 7th March speech of Bangabandhu inspired the Bangalee nation to intensify the freedom movement and to prepare for the War of Liberation that began on March 26 and resulted in the emergence of Independent Bangladesh on 16 December 1971.

Earlier, Bangabandhu had on March 3, launched the non-cooperation movement, called hartal everyday till March 6 and asked the people to attend  the Race Course rally to know about the future course of action. On March 7 people from all over the city and elsewhere gathered at the Race Course Ground and it turned into a human sea.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani troops killed many innocent people at different places of Bangladesh over the days since March 2.
