State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki on Wednesday said that the child marriage rate will drop by 50 percent in the next two years once the Child Marriage Restraint Act comes into effect.
She also said that the government will do whatever necessary to end the trend of child marriage.
She came up with the remarks while addressing a rally at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city, marking the International Women's Day, said a PID handout.
Mentioning that no underage girl can be married off as per the new law, the junior minister alleged that a vested quarter is spreading confusions over it. "The special provision has been incorporated in the act to protect the best interest of a girl which a court will ensure," she said, adding that guidelines will be formulated soon in this regard.
At the programme, five women were awarded in five categories for their contributions to their respective fields.
