Students of Home Economics College in Dhaka blocked Nilkhet intersection, one of the busiest roads in the city, on Monday morning demanding status of the college as a Dhaka University institution.
Hundreds of students of the college took the position on the road around 9:30 am, creating huge traffic gridlock at Ajimpur, Mirpur road and adjacent areas.
The students of Home Economics College have been demonstrating for eight years over this demand. They have, several times, blocked roads in a bid to press the government.
Their other demands include autonomy of the college, transport and library facilities, quality education, proper accommodation and appointing an adequate number of teachers.
Established in 1961, the college admits only female students in five departments -- Food and Nutrition, Resource Management and Entrepreneurship, Child Development and Social Relationship, Art and Creative Studies and Clothing and Textile..
