Law enforcers unearthed two more militant hideouts in the district on Wednesday, arresting a couple with a large quantity of grenades, firearms and explosive.
Police said they found two havens of militants during an anti-militancy drive in Sitakunda upazila in the afternoon.
At first, they broke down a den of militants at Amirabad and seized huge grenades, firearms and bomb-making materials from there.
A militant couple with a kid was arrested from the den. They were identified as Jasim Uddin, 30, and his wife Arjina Begum, 23.A three-month kid was in her lap.
Sources said militants rented a ground-floor flat of a house ‘Sadhan Kuthir’ at Namar Bazar on March 4, identifying themselves as garment traders.
But, the house owner, Subhash, found their activities suspicious. When they wanted their national identity cards, they gave fake ones.
At one stage, Jasim along with his wife attacked Subhash and his wife with a knife. Arjina also tried to explode bombs from a suicide belt at that time, police said.
Hearing screams, locals thronged there and caught the militant couple. On information, police arrested them.
“A large quantity of grenades, bomb-making materials and firearms were recovered from the house,” Additional Police Superintendent Rezaur Rahman said.
Acting on confessions of the militant couple, police discovered another den on the ground floor of a two-storey house ‘Chhayanir’ on College Road at nearby Chowdhurypara.
As cops approached there, militants hurled grenades at the cops, leaving a police officer wounded.
The injured cop is Mojammel Haque, inspector (investigation) of Sitakunda police station.
Later, police cordoned off the house, said Shafiul Alam Murad, a councillor of Sitakunda Municipality.
Chittagong Superintendent of Police Nur-E-Alam Mina asked militants to surrender to the police, but they didn’t turn up.
Police suspected that militants are staying inside the house with a large quantity of explosive.
Bomb Disposal Unit of police and members of ‘Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat)’ condoned off the house and were taking preparations for launching an operation, sources said.
The militants from inside the building were throwing grenades at alw enforcers. However, no casualty was reported till the filing of this report at about 11:00pm.
The police super briefed newsmen that the militants are believed to be the members of Neo-JMB.
A special team is coming to the spot from Dhaka. After the arrival of the team, the next course of action will be taken, he said.
“This is a densely populated area. So, we are considering several matters before carrying out the final operation,” he added.
Last week, police discovered a hideout of Neo-JMB militants in a raid on Mirsarai in the district.
They arrested two militants in connection with an attack on a police check post in Comilla, and seized a large quantity of grenades and explosive from the den.
