BGMEA job fair in city Saturday

A daylong job fair for those intend to build a career in the country's apparel sector will be held in the city on Saturday, reports news agency UNB.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) will organize the fair at International Conference Centre, Bashundhara.

About 40 garment factory owners will participate in the fair to pick their required workers and executives from about 1000 job seekers who have already been trained up by BGMEA under its partnership program with the government's project "Skill for Employment Investment Programme (SEIP)".

BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman announced the details at a press briefing at the trade body's headquarters in the city on Thursday.

He said commerce minister Tofail Ahmed will inaugurate the career fair in the morning while state minister for labor Mujibul Haque Chunnu will also be present in the inaugural session.

The BGMEA chief said the finance ministry took up the SEIP project in partnership with nine trade bodies and five public and private organizations to create 260,000 skilled manpower across the country by 2018.

He noted that BGMEA has tied up with the SEIP to create 43,800 skilled manpower on 15 subjects by 2018 as per the requirement of the garment sector.

"BGMEA-SIEP project has already provided training to 20,000 people of which about 15,000 are operators and 5,000 are a mid-level executive for garment factories. Of them, some 10,000 trainees have already got jobs in garment factories," he said.

Siddique said this will be the first such job fair in the garment sector and BGMEA has a plan to organize such job fair regularly.

"We hope the participation of garment factory owners will be increasing in the coming years," he added.
