Eight killed in suicide blast at Moulvibazar den

At least eight militant suspects were found dead and mutilated during a joint-forces operation at their den at Nasirpur in Moulvibazar on Thursday.

The deceased were members of the Neo-JMB group, an offshoot of the banned JMB outfit, police said, adding that their identities could not be ascertained immediately.

“Law enforcers found seven to eight bodies of militants mutilated inside their hideout while conducting an operation,” said Monirul Islam, chief of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police.

He came up with the information while addressing a press briefing held at Khalilpur Union Parishad complex near the spot after the end of the operation.

Amid the crackdown, the militants might have blown up themselves by setting off bombs inside their den, as they failed to flee, police said.

Two children were among the deceased. All the dead were members of a family, the CTTC chief quoted a caretaker of the house as saying.

The operation codenamed ‘Operation Hit Back’ which began on Wednesday night ended on Thursday afternoon.

CCTC and SWAT members carried out the raid on the den.

Blasts rocked the area as militants exploded 12 bombs inside their haven.

A bomb disposal team entered the hideout around 4:00pm to check whether any explosive or militant was inside the home.

After checking the scene, the bodies will be recovered and sent to hospital for postmortems.

Meanwhile, Additional DIG (Sylhet Range) Nazrul Islam said joint forces will conduct an operation at Barohat ‘den’ of militants which has been cordoned off since Wednesday.

Some militants are allegedly staying inside the hideout with powerful bombs and explosives, police said.

Besides, law enforcers cordoned off another suspected hideout of militants at Kotbari in Comilla.

Police suspect that a militant is staying there with five to six powerful bombs and explosives.

The three dens of militants in Moulvibazar and Comilla were unearthed and encircled following information from a militant suspect arrested in Chittagong last Tuesday, said police officer Abid Hossain.

The new hideouts of militants were discovered by cops, a day after an operation at a den at Shibbari in Sylhet ended with the deaths of four militants.
