State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Wednesday said private sector is generating 49 percent of electricity.
The minister made the disclosure while speaking at a power purchase agreement (PPA) inking ceremony with Summit Power Limited at Bidyut Bhaban in the capital.
He told under the agreement, Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) will buy 149 megawatts power within 15 months.
"Except base load power, rest of electricity would be taken from private sector, as it contributes 49 percent power currently," he added.
Managing director of Summit-H Alliance Power Limited Eng M Mozammel Hossain and secretary of BPDB Mina Masud-uz-Zaman signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.
Power division secretary Dr Kaikaus Ahmed, chairman of BPDB Engineer Khaled Mahmud and chairman of Summit Group Muhammad Aziz Khan spoke on the occasion.
Under the deal, Summit Power Limited will commission a power plant at Kodda in Gazipur.
