Three old grenades recovered in Rangpur

Three pieces of old and abandoned grenades were recovered while digging earth at Ashratpur Chalk Bazar area in Rangpur city on Wednesday, police sources said.

Quoting Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Thana ABM Zahidul Islam BSS informed that a group of day-labourers first spotted the grenades while digging earth for construction of a new building there this morning.

Being informed, a special police squad led by Sub-inspector (SI) Fakhrul Islam from Kotwali Thana rushed to the spot, recovered the grenades and brought those to the Thana premises maintaining security.

"The recovered grenades are totally damaged and those might have been left by the defeated Pakistani occupation forces during the War of Liberation in 1971," SI Fakhrul said.

However, the next legal steps would be taken after examination of the recovered grenades by experts of the Bomb Disposal Team from Rangpur Cantonment, he added.

"A general diary has been registered with Kotwali Thana in this connection," OC Zahidul Islam said.
