The government is obstructing different socio-political organisations, including Bangladesh nationalist Party (BNP), from carrying out relief activities in the country's flood-hit haor areas, alleged Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Thursday.
BNP senior joint secretary general Rizvi made the allegation while speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office, UNB reports.
The government has politicised the distribution of relief materials among the flood victims, he added.
Rizvi said their party vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman was scheduled to go to Sunamganj on Friday to distribute relief materials among the flood victims. "But the local administration has foiled the visit on the pretext of the Prime Minister's planned tour."
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit the Sunamganj flood-affected areas on Sunday to see for herself the flood situation there.
Rizvi said it is now important to provide the flood-victims with relief materials. "But, the government is exposing its misrule by blocking different socio-political organisations from distributing relief on various grounds."
"It's now clear to the country's people that the government is ridiculing the helplessness condition of haor people as the top officials of Haor and Wetland Development Department are making a foreign trip at a time when flood hit the hoar areas," he observed.
The BNP leader said the government has failed to reach out the most victims in the disaster-hit areas with adequate assistance and renewed BNP's demand for announcing the flood-affected areas as disaster ones.
He, on behalf of BNP, called upon the non-governmental and social and political orgnisations and well-off section of society to stand beside the affected people with relief materials to assuage their sufferings.
