Journalist Ahmed Razu, the executive editor of the online newspaper Natun Somoy, on Wednesday got bail in two cases filed on charges of publishing ‘false news reports and demanding extortion’.
Two Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates -- Ahsan Habib and Rayhanul Islam---granted the bail after hearing on the two bail petitions for Ahmed Razu in the cases.
Razu’s lawyer Tarikul Islam said there is no legal bar to his client’s release from the custody following the bail in the both cases.
Police arrested journalist Razu from his Segunbagicha office on Sunday night in the ICT case filed with Ramna Police Station by Walton Group on charges of tarnishing the company’s image by deliberately running ‘fabricated’ news items.
Rabiul Islam, the first senior assistant-director of Creative and Publication of Walton Group filed another case with Paltan Police Station against the journalist on charges of demanding Tk 500,000.
