Higher Secondary Stipend Project (HSSP) of Education Ministry on Sunday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with state-owned telecom operator Teletalk to distribute mobile phone SIM cards free of cost among the stipend-awarded students.
HSSP Director Shyama Prasad Bepari and Teletalk Bangladesh Limited Managing Director Kazi Md. Golam Quddus signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides at the ministry's conference room in the city, said an official release.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim were present in the MoU signing ceremony.
Speaking at the function, the education minister said the main objective of giving stipend is to help the poor students, particularly girls, continue their education.
Ten percent of male students and 40 percent of female students of Higher Secondary classes are getting the stipend, he added.
Tarana Halim said a total of 2,23,000 SIM cards will be distributed among the students under the MoU.
Education Ministry's Secondary and Higher Education Division Additional Secretary Md Mahiuddin Khan, Post and Telecommunications Ministry Additional Secretary Md Azizul Islam and Director General of Secondary and Higher Education Directorate Dr S M Wahiduzzaman also addressed the function.
Technical and Madrasah Division acting Secretary Md Alamgir and senior officials of the ministry were present in the function, the release added..
