Shafat, Shadman remanded over Banani rape incident

A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Friday remanded prime suspect Shafat Ahmed for six days and his friend Sadman Sakif for five days in police custody in connection with rape incidents that took place inside a hotel in March.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Raihan Ul Islam passed the order after police produced them before the court seeking 10-day remand for each this afternoon.

Earlier, police brought Shafat and Sakif among the five accused of raping the two university girls an upscale hotel in Banani area of Dhaka over a month ago, to Dhaka after arresting them in Sylhet last night.

Joint Commissioner (Crime) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Krishna Pada Roy told journalists that they had found evidence of rape based on the primary interrogation of the two accused - Shafat and Sakif - and other information.

Earlier, a case was filed with Banani Police Station by a victim on May 6 alleging that she and one of her friends were raped by Shafat and Sakif confining them in two separate rooms of The Raintree Hotel in Banani at gunpoint.

Subsequently, they took video of the scene with the help of their three other accomplices - Naim Ashraf, driver Billal and bodyguard Abul Kalam Azad.

Three others accused remained still untraced.
