High Court transfers Zia Orphanage Trust graft case to new judge

The High Court (HC) has transferred the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to a new trial court.

Earlier, two graft cases against Khaleda Zia over the embezzlement of fund of Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust were pending with Dhaka-3 Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar.

Now the Zia Charitable Trust case has been shifted to Dhaka-5 Special Judge Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim passed the order on Wednesday.

The HC came out with the transfer order following a petition filed by Khaleda Zia seeking a change of court. Earlier, the HC transferred Zia Orphanage Trust Case to Senior Special Judge Quamrul Hossain Mollah.

Then the case was shifted to Dhaka-5 Special Judge Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

Now, two cases will be tried by Special Judge Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

Khaleda Zia filed a petition with the HC expressing no confidence in the existing court. She sought the matter to be tried by a new judge for fair justice.

The ACC filed both the cases on August 8 in 2011 with Tejgaon police station, accusing Khaleda and others.
