Govt to build 1,029 new community clinics

The government will set up 1,029 new community clinics in different parts of the country to provide free treatment facilities to people living in the rural areas.

Besides, 2,000 existing community clinics will be renovated to improve the quality of healthcare services from the rural clinics.

Public health experts have lauded the government’s move to establish more community clinics, saying that more rural areas will come under the coverage of the state-run primary healthcare system with the establishment of new community clinics.

Dr Rashid E Mahbub, former president of Bangladesh Medical Association, told daily sun that community clinics are the nerve centre of county’s health system. “But some rural areas still do not have community clinics, which is a barrier to the government’s efforts for ensuring affordable healthcare for all,” he said.

“Some of the community clinics are facilitating institutional delivery, which is helping to reduce maternal and child mortality,” he added.

He said the community clinics have earned public confidence by facilitating safe childbirths in rural areas in addition to providing free healthcare services and medicines to the rural people, adding that establishment of  1,029 new clinics will significantly expand the coverage of the rural healthcare system.

He also called upon the government to renovate the existing community clinics at the earliest possible time.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim at a recent function said the success of the community clinics has been recognised globally for its design and service.

“One community clinic can serve 6000 people.

This is the design of the clinic and 32 item of medicines are being provided to people free of cost from each community clinic,” he added.

Institutional delivery service has been rendering from 1500 community clinics in the rural areas to ensure safe childbirth, said the health minister.
