The government has taken necessary initiatives to set up the country's fourth medical university in Sylhet for further improvement of medical education.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given approval to institute the Sylhet Medical University, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim at a meeting at the auditorium of Finance Ministry on Wednesday.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was present in the meeting.
After the meeting, Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry Sirajul Islam told journalist that the government has decided to set up the forth medical university in Sylhet.
"The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given approval to this end. Now we are working to formulate a law," he added.
A vice-chancellor (VC) will be appointed after the formulation of the law, he said.
State Minister for Health Jahid Malek, former mayor of Sylhet Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, Director General of Health Division Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad and Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong Medical University Professor Dr Ismail Hossain, among others, were present in the meeting.
