Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has said the government would launch four more ships on Barisal-Chittagong route in the next year.
"We are now increasing more vessels and ferries on river routes compared with the past years and four more well-equipped ships will be launched on the Barisal-Chittagong route in the next year," said the minister while talking to journalists after his visit at Ilisha and Beduria Ferighat under Bhola Sadar upazila on Wednesday.
The shipping minister said the vessels would run double-trip during the upcoming Eid for making the journey of holidaymakers smooth and enjoyable.
"Our vessels are now equipped with modern facilities such as lift, ICU, Wi-Fi and other digitised systems," said the minister.
Urging employees of launch not to carry excessive passengers during the Eid, Khan said the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) would engage magistrates at all the river ports to avert any untoward incident.
The minister also assured that no excessive fair would be charged from the passengers during the upcoming Eid.
