‘Criminal’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

A suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of criminals at Monakhali of Mujibnagar upazila in Meherpur early Monday.


The deceased was identified as Majibul Haq Moji, an alleged criminal, hailing from Jatarpur village in the upazila, UNB reports.


Tipped off that two gangs of criminals were exchanging gunshots at Korgarta field, a team of police went to the spot at around 2:15am, said Ahsan Habib, assistant superintendent (circle) of Meherpur Police.


Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals managed to flee the scene.


Later, police with the help of local people went to the spot and recovered the body of Majibul from the scene, he said.


They also recovered one LG, two shells of cartridges, four cartridges, three crude bombs and some locally made weapons from the spot.


The deceased Moji was wanted in a dozen of cases, said the ASP.
