The Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Flyover, the largest flyover in the port city of Chittagong, from Muradpur to Wasa Intersection in Lalkhan Bazar was opened to traffic on an experimental basis on Friday.
Chairman of the Chittagong Development Authority Abdus Salam opened two lanes of the flyover to traffic, saying it is an Eid-ul-Fitr gift for the city dwellers.
Expecting that it will play an important role in easing traffic congestion in the city, Salam said the originally 5.2-km flyover has been upgraded to a 6.8-km one encompassing Gate No 2 of Sholashahar and GEC intersection.
He also said the flyover constructed at a cost of Tk 696.34 crore will fully be opened to traffic after Eid.
Project Director of the flyover M Mahfuzur Rahman said they completed the flyover much ahead of the deadline. "The flyover will remain as an example of quick and flawless work."
He also said they used launchers instead of cranes for lifting the flyover girders.
"We usually get stuck in gridlock after office time and in the evening."
Terming the construction of the flyover a time-befitting decision, former Principal of Chittagong Medical College Prof Dr Sultanul Alam said Muradpur, GEC intersection and Lalkhan Bazar areas used to experience worst traffic gridlock.
