Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday urged the meritorious and honest persons to join politics to save the political arena from bankruptcy, reports BSS.
"If meritorious persons would not come to politics, inefficient persons will become lawmakers to run the country . . . the country will be run by meritless persons," he told the 16th anniversary day programme of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) in Dhaka.
He said abuse of drugs, including yaba, is rising like "silent tsunami" in the society.
The minister called for making united efforts to save the youths from the menace of drug abuse.
NSTU Vice-Chancellor Professor M Wahiduzzaman chaired the function while local lawmaker Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Abul Hossain and NSTU Teachers Association President Yusuf Miah, among others.
Earlier, Quader inaugurated the university day programme by releasing balloons and pigeons on the university premises.
