Title contender Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd were held by old Dhaka outfit Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society in their 4th round match of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital on Sunday.
Their encounter of 10th season of country’s premier football, sponsored by Saif Power Battery, kicked off at 6:00 pm.
Sheikh Jamal were in a good position in the 12-team league earning full points from their first three matches.
With the day’s result, Sheikh Jamal DC maintained their 2nd slot in the league collecting 10 points from four outings while Rahamatganj advanced to the 3rd slot from 4th by virtue of better goal difference, collecting seven points from four matches with two wins one draw and one defeat.
However, last year’s runners-up Chittagong Abahani took solo lead with all-win run securing 12 points from four matches while defending champions Dhaka Abahani slipped to 4th from 3rd despite securing seven points from outings with two wins one draw and one loss.
In the day’s match, Sheikh Jamal DC took the lead in the 20th minute as a left footed shot of their Gambian forward Momodou Bah’s from the top of the six yard box found the net, utilizing a 35 yards long pass from forward Enamul Haque (1-0).
In the following minute, Asif Hossain Rimon leveled the margin for Rahmatganj MFS sending the ball home from danger zone, off a right wing corner of captain Naimur Rahman Shahed (1-0).
Rahamatganj managed a chance to take the lead in the 53rd minute but a left footed attempt by Shahed from the box, off a cross of midfielder Elias from the left, went outside edging the right post.
The 2nd slot holders in the 12-team league and three times champions Sheikh Jamal DC were sweated out in the 2nd half to deny any further humiliation by Rahamatganj’s repeated attacks.
Sheikh Jamal had a chance to take lead in the 63rd minute but their forward Mamadou Bah failed to utilise the opportunity.
On the 89th minute Rahmatganj forward Zatta Mustafa broke through Sheikh Jamal defense but could not outclass the goalie.
After the final whistle from the referee, footballers of both team left the rain soaked waterlogged stadium with a drawn result of 1-1.
Four yellow cards were handed to Rahmatganj’s booters by referee Jalal Uddin while Sheikh Jamal received three yellow cards in the match.
In today’s lone match, Farahsganj Sporting Club will play against Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd at 6:00 pm at BNS.
Both of the matches will be played at Bangabandhu National Stadium.
After a day’s gap on August 15, the remaining matches of round-4 will resume on Wednesday. Newly joined BPL team Saif Sporting Club Ltd will meet Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra at 5:00 pm whereas Arambagh Krira Sangha will face Brothers Union Ltd at 7:15 pm.
