Speakers at a roundtable discussion in the city on Tuesday suggested reducing election expenditures for the sake of meaningful polls.
They made the suggestion at the discussion titled 'For Holding Fair, Neutral and Acceptable Election', organized by Shushashoner Jannyo Nagorik (SHUJAN) at Jatiya Press Club, reports BSS.
Former Election Eommissioner Brigadier General (Retd) M Shakhawat Hossain, Justice Kazi Ebadul Haque, eminent journalist and columnist Syed Abul Maksud, former state minister for foreign affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury and politician Humayun Kabir Hiru, among others, addressed the discussion.
SHUJAN President M Hafiz Uddin Khan chaired the meeting while its secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumder presented a keynote paper.
Shakhawat Hossain said the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) is the strongest and the largest polls body among the South Asian democratic countries in view of legal, theoretical and manpower aspects. The commission has an independent entity, he added.
The EC has about 3,500 staffers and it has the ability to hold a free and fare election, he said.
