Under construction bridge collapsed in Kushtia

A under construction bridge has been collapsed less than an hour after the casting on Wednesday.

The bridge, costing Tk 32 lakh, was being constructed over Chhatian Paruli lake in Mirpur upazila in Kushtia district.

Locals alleged that, the bridge collapsed due to irregularities in the construction process overlooked by the authority.

The convener of Kushtia Conscious Citizen Committee, Rafikul Alam Tuku said, exemplary steps should be taken against those responsible for the collapse.

Local Union Parishad Chairman Jasim Uddin Biswas said after long waiting and consisting efforts they managed to get allocation for the much needed bridge. A company called Dolphin was subsequently contracted to build it some months ago.

The owner of Dolphin, Jahidul Islam Ranju, denied the charge of any irregularity and said labourers didn’t do the shuttering properly and so the bridge collapsed. There was no irregularity behind it, he maintained.
