Thousands of people thronged the Egg Fair venue in Dhaka’s Khamarbari area early in the morning to buy eggs at Taka 3 but had to return empty handed after chaos and anarchy ensued there.
People of all walks of life thronged the place, some of whom have been waiting since dawn. Their presence prompted the organisers to start the egg sale at 9am, an hour before schedule. But the authirities called off the fair immidiatly after opening because of chaos and anarchy.
Being angered at the unavailability of eggs, majority of the fair goers then started vandalising makeshift shops at the fair venue.
The agitating people also shouted slogans against the organisers. Later police had to take step to control the excited mob.
Bangladesh is observing the World Egg Day today with over 40 countries of the world simultaneously.
Earlier, Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) announced to sell egg at special discount of Taka 3 each egg.
Earlier, BPICC President Mashiur Rahman said preparations were taken to observe the day across the country in a befitting manner. Marking the day, procession will be brought out and discussions will be staged at divisional cities under the arrangement of BPICC and DPS, he said.
In the district towns, DPS and different organization of professionals will observe the World Egg Day.
A colorful procession will be brought out from Krishibid Institution in the capital Dhaka at 9am which will return to the venue after marching different city streets.
A discussion will be held at 10am at the 3-D Seminar Hall at the institution.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayon Chandra Chanda will attend it as the chief guest.
