The car carrying Sajeda Chowdhury, the deputy leader of the parliament, came under attack on Friday afternoon at the Talma intersection in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur district.
The veteran Awami League leader Sajeda Chowdhury MP’s motorcade was attacked by the supporters of local AL leader Sheikh Jamal Hossain Mia, police and locals said.
According to the sources and local correspondent, a clash between Sajeda and Jamal’s supporters was ensued centering removal of posters and banners this afternoon.
Jamal’s supporters attacked on Sajeda’s supporters while they were removing posters and banners with picture of Jamal, who has been vying for the party’s ticket from the Faridpur 2 seat.
Sajeda Chowdhury’s motorcade entered the area during the clash and came under attack.
However, no one get hurt in the attack. Sajeda had safely reached her home in Rasulpur village.
Nagarkanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge ASM Nasim told that hundreds of the agitated supporters of Jamal Hosain Mia hurled brick bat targeting the motorcade carrying the Deputy leader of the parliament around 2:30pm Friday afternoon.
The MP’s car as well as two cars carrying Nagarkanda Circle ASP FM Mohiuddin and other senior police officers were vandalised but all the passengers were unharmed, Nasim said.
The attackers were supporters of Awami League leader Sheikh Jamal Hossain Mia, who had been vying for the party’s ticket from the Faridpur 2 seat, the OC said.
“I was in the motorcade. The attackers were followers of Jamal Hossain,” he said.
Police fired 10 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the mob, and eventually the motorcade was able to move.
Meanwhile, police have held three men after the attack and preparing to lodge a case in this connection, local correspondent reported.
Sajeda Chowdhury could not be reached for comments.
Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Umme Salma Tanjia and Superintendent of Police Subhash Chandra Saha went to her home immediately after the incident.
