Customs Intelligence officials detained two people, including an employee of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, while smuggling gold bars weighing about 1.2 kg at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Saturday.
The detainees were identified as Omar Faruk, a ground traffic supervisor of Biman, and Kazi Kamrul Islam, a passenger of a flight from Kuala Lumpur.
Kamrul landed at the airport on a flight of Malaysian Airlines around 4:30am, said Moinul Khan, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).
They were detained in the boarding bridge area of the airport when Kamrul was handing over the gold bars wrapped up in scotch tape to Faruk, he added.
Later, customs intelligence officials found 12 gold bars. The price of the gold recovered is about Tk 60 lakh.
