BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will return home today after around four months of stay in the United Kingdom.
The party has taken preparation for giving her a warm reception after her arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.
Khaleda is returning home when three arrest warrants were issued for her in three cases in the second week of October.
Party sources said BNP leaders and activists from central to grassroots levels are eagerly waiting for her with the hope that she is returning with some important decisions made with her son and party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.
“With great emotion, BNP leaders and activists will be present at the airport to give their party chairperson a warm reception after her arrival in Dhaka from London,” BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu told daily sun.
He said Khaleda Zia will arrive at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport after 4pm.
BNP sources said the party chairperson is scheduled to leave London for Dhaka by a flight of Emirates Airlines on October 17 night (London time) and arrive in Dhaka around 5:40pm on Wednesday.
The party central leaders and Dhaka south and north units’ leaders have already held meetings and planned to give their party chief a warm reception at the airport while many leaders and activists are also expected to come from adjacent districts to join the programme, the sources added.
Some central and Dhaka city BNP leaders said the party men carrying banners, festoons and flowers spontaneously will stand on both sides of the Airport road and give a reception to Khaleda Zia on Wednesday on her way to Gulshan residence in the capital.
Khaleda went to the UK on July 15 for ‘medical treatment’ as well as unofficial meetings with her elder son Tarique Rahman. She was accompanied by her private secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and domestic help Fatema during her London trip.
She stayed at the house of Tarique Rahman, who holds the second most powerful position within the party and has been living along with his wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman in the UK since 2008.
Khaleda celebrated the Eid-ul-Azha there with her family members, including Tarique Rahman, his wife and daughter and the wife and daughters of her younger son late Arafat Rahman Koko in London.
The BNP chief missed several possible dates of her homecoming that spreads various rumuors.
Various speculations were surfaced in the country’s political arena centring on her London visit and staying there for a long time for treatment of her eye and knee.
In absence of Khaleda, BNP faced a number of important issues such as flood, the apex court verdict on the 16th amendment to the constitution, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s going on leave, Rohingya crisis, dialogue with the Election Commission and the party’s organisational crisis.
BNP insiders said hopes are running high among BNP men from central to grassroots levels, as the party chairperson is returning from her much-trumpeted London trip.
The party senior leaders said Khaleda Zia will place her formula on election-time supportive government after coming home from the UK.
Talking to daily sun, BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said the party men will be inspired and encouraged after the homecoming of Khaleda Zia.
