No alternative of research to protect endangered fish species: JS body

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Wednesday recommended taking necessary measures for further improving and expanding research activities to increase fish production and conserve biodiversity by protecting and increasing breeding of endangered species of fish in fresh and saline water.


The recommendation was made at the 24th meeting of the committee at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with committee Chairperson Mir Showkat Ali Badsha in the chair, said an official release.

Committee members Sate Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayon Chandra Chanda, Iftiquar Uddin Talukder Pintu, Kh. Azizul Huq Arzu, Advocate Md Altaf Ali and Shamsun Nahar Begum (Advocate) attended the meeting.

The meeting also recommended taking initiatives to take a project on an urgent basis for conducting research activities on shrimp in the country's southern region, particularly in greater Khulna. 

The meeting held discussions, in detail, on improving research activities on endangered native species of fish, progresses of ongoing projects under Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute and regional and international collaborative activities of different divisions affiliated to the ministry. 

Senior officials concerned of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry and Parliament Secretariat were present in the meeting, among others.
