Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Thursday said the Rangpur region will get gas connection and see industrialisation soon.
He came up with the disclosure while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organised by Rangpur Division Journalist Association, Dhaka at a city hotel.
Tofail said the government is establishing special economy zones for ensuring region-based development. “Special importance is being given to Rangpur.”
“Once the northern region used to be known as a monga-striken one, but now the word, ‘monga’, is a history. The region saw massive development following the construction of the Bangabandhu Bridge and this trend will continue,” he said, adding that they want to make the country free from hunger and poverty by 2030, reports UNB.
Jatiya Party Co-chairman GM Quader, former FBCCI President Abdul Awal Mintoo and newly elected mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Mostafizur Rahman also spoke at the seminar.
Speakers at the seminar termed the Rangpur division as a backward region, saying it sees no industrialisation for lack of electricity and gas.
