Intending contenders busy doing mass contact

Intending mayoral candidates for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls are busy doing mass contact to draw the attention of voters, local leaders and activists of their parties.

All the mayoral hopefuls are also desperately trying to get nomination from their parties for the upcoming DNCC by-election to be held with party symbols.

The Election Commission (EC) at a meeting on Thursday decided to hold the DNCC by-election on February 26. The polls schedule will be declared on January 9.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq.

As per the EC decision, elections for the councilor post in 36 new wards – 18 in DNCC and 18 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) – will also be held the same day.

Former BGMEA president Atiqul Islam are carrying out mass contact claiming that he has already got green signal from the high command of the ruling Awami League.

But the AL is yet to announce the name of the candidate for the mayoral post.

Many others, who intend to contest the DNCC mayoral race with AL ticket, have also started mass contact in their areas and at the same time, they are trying to get nomination.

They are former assistant secretary of AL central sub-committee Russel Ashequi, AL Dhaka north unit general secretary Sadek Khan and Haque Group Managing Director Adam Tamizi Haque are among the intending mayoral candidates of the party.

The mayoral aspirants are now engaged in doing various social activities in their areas to gain popularity and impress the party high command for getting nomination.

BNP’s mayoral aspirant Tabith Awal, son of former FBCCI president Abdul Awal Minto, is yet to launch mass contact as his party has not yet announced his name.

Some others from different political parties are also conducting mass contact to get support from the people in their areas for contesting the DNCC mayoral race.

Acting secretary of EC secretariat Helal Uddin Ahmed told the daily sun that an aspirant can do such kind of mass contact before the polls schedule is announced.

“But we have asked the nomination seekers to remove all the polls campaign materials such as posters pasted to the walls of the buildings in the DNCC area,” he said.

“As per law, an aspirant can conduct polls campaign soon after announcement of the polls schedule,” he added.

Contacted, Dr Abdul Alim, Director of Election Working Group, said DNCC election is very important for the major political parties like the ruling AL and BNP.

“All the political parties want to secure victory in the DNCC by-election.

So, they will have to fix strategies and suitable candidates for the polls,” he added.

The political parties consider the DNCC polls to be very important as they will have a scope to test their popularity through the polls ahead of the next parliamentary election, he noted.

Dr Alim also said local government polls and national election are not the same as “we saw earlier that winners of local body polls lost the national elections.”
