No foreign countries have yet visibly extended solidarity to the BNP’s demand for an immediate release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, party sources said.
International organisations have also stayed silent about the five years’ imprisonment of Khaleda Zia though 12 days have passed since her conviction in a corruption case, they added.
Their silence has upset the opposition party and its political allies who stage only peaceful programmes in protest against the imprisonment.
Talking to the daily sun, some political analysts said it seems that BNP has become ‘literally isolated’ from their international connections.
The party has not got any sympathetic response from domestic and foreign quarters over the imprisonment of its chairperson.
They also said many parties and international organisations are not directly pressing for Khaleda’s release as she is convicted in a corruption case on February 8.
Replying to a query, BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “Many political parties and organisations lodged protests against the conviction of Khaleda Zia.”
“No notable response has yet come from home and abroad after the conviction of Khaleda Zia, which is definitely frustrating,” a senior leader said.
Senior leaders of other political parties, including Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Gana Forum, Nagarik Oikya, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Krishak Sramik Janata League and left parties, have not expressed solidarity with the BNP hunger strike on February 15 against the imprisonment.
Asked about the issue, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “We didn’t tell any other parties to join it.”
“We didn’t express our solidarity with the BNP’s demand for Khaleda’s release from jail,” Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Nagarik Oikya, told the daily sun on Tuesday.
“We didn’t extend solidarity to the BNP’s demand for Khaleda Zia’s release,” said Khalequzzaman, general secretary of the Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD).
Responding to a question at a press conference on Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she didn’t got any phone call from international arena over Khaleda Zia’s conviction.”.
