IBC demands Tk 16,000 as minimum wage for RMG workers

IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC) on Sunday demanded Tk 16,000 as minimum wage for the garment workers.

IBC Secretary General Md Tauhidur Rahman made the demand at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city.

“In the present pay structure of Tk 5,300, it’s hardly possible for garment workers to bear their family expenses,” he said.

The prices of daily essentials as well as the house rent continue to go up and with only Tk 5,300, a garment worker alone can hardly survive, Tauhidur added.

Citing a survey conducted in Dhaka, Chittagong, Gazipur, Ashulia and Narayanganj at the end of 2016, he said a four-member family of a garment worker needs at least Tk 19,212 per month to survive.
