A passenger has been charged with battery after being removed from a flight for allegedly assaulting a flight attendant.
The man, Colby Hilleary, was on an American Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas/Fort Worth, when he began to behave “erratically,” according to KHOU11.
He reportedly told the flight attendant that “the plane was going the wrong way,” and that “there were no pilots” on board.
After continued complaints and odd behavior, Hilleary got out of his seat and punched a flight attendant in the face, claiming the plane was hijacked, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The plane made an emergency landing at Tampa International Airport, where Hilleary was arrested. The Tampa Bay Times reported that a judge ordered Hilleary to submit to a psychiatric treatment, and that he is barred from any air travel.
Interfering with the duties of a flight attendant is punishable up to 20 years in prison and fines up to $250,000.
