BNP is facing a new political problem as a fierce controversy has aroused over the citizenship of party acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who is staying in London on political asylum.

Party men are worried about Tarique’s fate. They will fall into another crisis if he is brought back home and put on trial, several senior leaders said.

Tarique, who was already convicted in two cases, are facing many cases.

The party’s movement for BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release from jail is losing attention due to its preoccupation in city elections and the Tarique issue.

“If Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman can’t participate in the next national election, their party may face a critical situation,” a senior leader told the daily sun, wishing anonymity.

BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “The government is spreading propaganda against us in a concerted way and carrying out different evil activities in a bid to mislead people.”

“They (govt) are doing everything centering the next parliamentary elections.

They have kept Khaleda in jail in a false case.”

Speaking at a programme on Friday, Mosharraf said that the government will not be able to bring back Tarique from London.

“It’s a conspiracy against BNP. It’s a part of plot to keep Khaleda from election.”

BNP leader Mahbubur Rahman said, “All controversies will end if a free, fair and neutral general election is held.”

Party sources said BNP leaders are worried as a number of top leaders are likely to face trial and reinvestigation into graft cases.

Talking to the daily sun, BNP leaders said the party has lost its attention to carry out movement for release of Khaleda as they are facing various crises.

BNP insiders said party men are still uncertain about release of Khaleda Zia before the next election.
