The voting in Khulna City Corporation elections was held peacefully except some stray incidents of violence and irregularities, said Election Working Group (EWG), an umbrella organisation comprising 32 civil society bodies, on Wednesday.

The EWG made the announcement on KCC polls at a press conference at the auditorium of Jatiya Press Club in the capital.  EWG Director Dr Md Abdul Alim read out the statement at the press conference while Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, member of the organisation, was also present.

Prof Kalimullha said there were some problems in the polls, but these did not have any impact on it.“It is a local government election but it has a big effect on the upcoming parliamentary polls,” he said.

The average voter turnout in polling stations was 64.8 percent, he said, adding that the EWG monitored 145 voting centres out of the total 289.
