5 fishermen held for catching fish illegally in Sundarbans

BAGERHAT: Members of Smart (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) Patrolling team in a drive arrested five fishermen while they were catching fish illegally without getting permission from Bandeali canal at Katka sanctuary of Sundarbans in Sharankhola upazila on Monday, reports UNB.

The arrested fishermen are-Shahidul Islam, 35, Abdul Halim, 20, Saiful Islam, 22, Sobhan Ali, 26, and Badal Hossain, 25, of Patharghata upazila in Barguna district.

Tipped off, a team of Smart Patrolling conducted a drive in the deep forest of Sundarbans and arrested them while catching fish at Katka sanctuary around 10am, said Mahmudul Hasan, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Zone.

They entered into the canal on Saturday.

One boat, two maunds of fish and five nets were recovered from their possession.
