Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation of Sylhet Zone has submitted a memorandum to the office of the  Sylhet Customs and Excise and Vat Commissioerate on four-point demand.

They have submitted the memorandum to the additional commissioner Md Niazur Rahman of the Customs and Excise and Vat Commissioerate on behalf of commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.

The demands include the bidi industry should be declared as a cottage industry like in India and there should not be discriminatory tax policy in comparison with cigarettes in every budget.

To realise their demand, the Bidi Sramik Federation formed a human chain in front of the office of Sylhet Customs and Excise and Vat Commissioerate in Sylhet.

Speakers of human chain said bidi will be available till the cigarette exists in the country. It has to fix customs duty at Tk14 for per thousand of bidis, and there should be waiver of tax for bidi factories that produce less than 20 lakh sticks.

Speakers also said thousands of workers of this sector depend on this sector. There should not be any discriminatory policy between bidi and cigarette in the fiscal of 2018-19. They will go for tougher action if any discriminatory policy is implemented.

The human chain was addressed by federation leader Lutfor Rahman, Shahjahan Master, business leader Rezaul Karim, Abdul Zabbar, Narayanchandra Singh. Convener of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation Sylhet Zone Md Moshair Rahman presided over the event.

Hundreds of bidi workers took part in the human chain.
