Five smugglers held with black basalt statue

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested five statue smugglers and recovered a black basalt statue from Basail village in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj district on Tuesday.

The arrestees were identified as Ismail Hossain, 32, son of Ahed Ali, a resident of Poila village in Shivalaya upazila, Chan Mia Bepari, 70, son of Monsur Bepari hailing from Zafarganj village in the upazila, Ranojit Sarker, 35, son of Mintu Sarker from Nayakandi Purbopara village, Delawar Hossain, 28, son Fazar Ali and Alamgir Sheikh, 30, son of Kashem Ali from Golra Purbapara village in Saturia upazila, reports UNB.

Major Masudur Rahman of RAB-04 said members of RAB had been communicating with the smugglers as buyers for the few days.

On Tuesday afternoon, RAB members were taken to an areca garden at Basail village by smugglers to show black basalt statue, they showed statue and demanded Tk 20 corer for black basalt statue, he added.

Meanwhile, RAB members caught them red handed with a black basalt statue weighing 6.5 kg weight.

The arrestees were later handed to Shivalaya Police Station.

Officer-in Charge of Shivalaya Police Station Rokibuzzaman said a case was filed by RAB-04 in this connection.
