Bangladesh Bank former governor Dr Atiur Rahman along with five former academics of Dhaka University (DU) has been appointed as Professor Emeritus of the institution.

The academic council made the decision on Thursday while final approval will come from syndicate meeting of the university; a faculty member confirmed the matter on Saturday.

Four other new Professors Emeritus are Syed Manjurul Islam of English department, Dr Khandaker Bazlul Haque of international business department, Dr Nazrul Islam of geography and environment department, Rafiqun Nabi and Hashem Khan of drawing and painting department at the Faculty of Fine Art.

Eminent professors are appointed as emeritus professors after the completion of the specified age limit of 65 years of service at Dhaka University for their meritorious contribution to education.

Retired teachers with the status of Professors Emeritus enjoy full privileges of a professor until they reach 76.

In the last three decades, seven teachers of Dhaka University have been honoured with the title of Professors Emeritus.

They are: Abdul Jabbar, Serajul Islam Choudhury, Anisuzzaman, Sultana Sarwat Ara Zaman, Nazma Chowdury, Abdul Matin and AK Azad Chowdhury.

Regarding the appointment, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said that the academic council approved the recommendations for the appointment of new Professor Emeritus.
