In a bid to combat the alarming statistics of tobacco-related deaths in Bangladesh, Nari Maitree, a leading women's advocacy group, organised a training session on Wednesday under the theme "Empowering Women's Voices to Advocate for the Enhancement of Current Tobacco Control Legislation."

Every day, an average of 442 lives is lost in Bangladesh due to various diseases related to tobacco use, highlighting the urgent need for robust tobacco control laws. The training session, held at the Nari Maitree headquarters in Agargaon, brought together anti-tobacco women leaders who passionately united in their call for stronger legislation.

Md. Abdus Salam Miah, Programs Manager of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) Bangladesh, graced the occasion as a special speaker. Addressing the gathering, Miah highlighted the disturbing trend of higher smokeless tobacco use among women in Bangladesh compared to men.

Attributing this trend to the consumption of tobacco products such as jorda, gul, and white leaf tobacco, Miah emphasised the severe health consequences faced by women, including complex diseases like mouth cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. Pregnant women, in particular, confront diverse issues such as the potential for abortion and maternal mortality during labor due to tobacco use.

The participants underscored the importance of staying attentive and well-informed regarding the protection of maternal health. By advocating for the enhancement of current tobacco control legislation, Nari Maitree aims to create a healthier future for women in Bangladesh.

The event was a testament to the collective commitment of anti-tobacco women's leaders who, through education and advocacy, strive to create a society free from the devastating impact of tobacco-related diseases.
