One more garment factory namely Shah Fatehullah Textile Mills Ltd has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

The textile mills located in Narayanganj secured a platinum rating, with a score of 87.

As a result, the country has achieved remarkable progress sustainably, boasting about 207 LEED-certified green factories.

This impressive lineup includes 77 platinum-rated, 116 gold-rated, and 10 silver-rated facilities, underscoring the country’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said on Tuesday.

Now Bangladesh is the global leader with the highest number of green garment buildings. The country received the LEED certifications of two factories in 2011 and achieved the highest certifications of 30 green factories in 2022.

“Today, we mark a monumental achievement in the spinning industry in Bangladesh with the launch of the world's first and only LEED Platinum-certified spinning factory. This groundbreaking initiative exemplifies our commitment to environmental stewardship and sets a global standard for responsible manufacturing in the textile industry,” Ahnaf Shah, Director of Shah Fatehullah Group told the Daily Sun.

“With innovation at our core, we're shaping the future of the textile industry, one sustainable thread at a time. What makes us even prouder is that Bangladesh has achieved this status of having the most sustainable spinning factory in the world," he added.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan said the ready-made garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh, once being questioned for its workplace safety standards, has emerged as a role model now.

“This is a testament to our uncompromised stance toward sustainability. Qualifying for LEED certification is not an easy task, it requires significant investment and most importantly it requires a vision and commitment to our planet and our future generations,” he added.
