Sounds of mortar explosions reverberated through the Teknaf frontiers under Cox’s Bazar district on Sunday night, creating panic among the residents leaving along the frontlines afresh.
Sources said the explosions of mortar were heard from the villages under the Hnila and Hoaikkong unions of Teknaf upazila from 9:30pm to 10pm.
The conflict has been going on in the Nakpura area north of Maundaw City in Myanmar and sounds of explosions were coming from the spot, they said.
Though sounds of gunshots and mortar explosions were insignificant over the last few days, the intensified clashes created panic among the people leaving at the villages along the borders again, said the sources.
However, no significant sound was heard from 10pm on Sunday to Monday morning, they added.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Adnan Chowdhury told the Daily Sun that sounds of explosions was heard through the frontiers in Hoaikkong Union and adjoining areas.
Locals reported that the sounds were heard after some days, said the UNO.
Mentionable, the conflict between Myanmar security forces and the rebel Arakan Army, which intensified since February 3, has seen mortar shells and bullets encroaching into Bangladesh territory, resulting in casualties and injuries.
In response to these challenges, the government has heightened the vigilance of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel to thwart any potential infiltration attempts across the Myanmar borders during the conflict.
Additional BGB forces have been deployed in border areas to closely monitor and manage the situation.
