Flood risks have surged across Sylhet as waters in all the rivers in and around the district have breached danger levels, thanks to the impact of cyclone Remal.

Low-lying areas of four upazilas bordering India have already been flooded, and the flooded area are set to expand.

Nearly 1,000 milimetre rainfall was recorded at Cherapunji in Meghalaya hilly areas on Tuesday and Wednesday, Indian weather officials have reported. The sudden incidence of torrential rain in the hilly areas of India's Meghalaya and Assam states have swelled rivers there sending the excess water downstream into Sylhet.

Due to the influence of cyclone Remal, rains also occured in Sylhet.

The flooed affected upazilas are: Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Companiganj, and Kanaighat. Shelters have been opened in all the four upazilas. Authoririties in Gowainghat upazila used mikes on Wednesday morning to urge people to take refuge in the 56 shelters opened across the upazila.

Earlier, flash flood was reported around the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria district. The flooding occured as a result of continuous rain since Tuesday midnight and flow of upstream water from India's tripura the following morning, in the wake of cyclone Remal.
