Karupannya, a rug-making factory in Rangpur, has received the prestigious RIBA International Award for Excellence. This factory is more than just a workplace; it integrates the natural environment to enhance the well-being of its employees.

The building's functional design features extensive planting that provides shade and natural ventilation. Gardens and courtyards around the factory and on its parkland roof create spaces for relaxation, social interaction, and recreation.

Inside, water pools cool the air as it filters through green screens and is drawn upwards by the stack effect through four atria. The factory floors offer views of the surrounding landscape. Additional facilities include a medical centre, grocery shop, daycare, prayer room, and canteen, all designed to inspire workers and make them feel at home.

The project is designed to stimulate the senses, with the beauty of green landscaping, the sound of water, and the pleasure of cool, flowing air and natural light. These features make the factory a welcoming place, with many workers choosing to visit during their free time.

Notably, 80% of the 4,000 employees are women, and the factory has significantly raised their societal status and respect at home.

A sculpture named Bonolota, symbolising the strength of women's empowerment, stands in the landscaped entrance parkland, emphasising the project's ethos.

Entry to the factory is on the first floor, accessible via Nandini Park, which leads to a dramatic flight of podium steps or a ramp for accessibility. Inside, walkways cross ponds and lead into naturally lit, seven-story atria. The building, a rectangular block, features a concrete frame with locally sourced masonry infill walls. It also includes PV and solar panel arrays, meeting the LEED Green Building rating and achieving Platinum Certification for operation and maintenance.

Completed on 1 December 2018, and designed by Nakshabid Architects, Karupannya is a commendable model for future industrial projects.
