The investigation into the brutal murder of MP Anwarul Azim Anar seems to have tangled in a web of unanswered questions and conflicting information with new layers of complexity emerging with each passing day.
Although one month has elapsed since the murder in Kolkata, many questions still remain unanswered while conflicting information continues to emerge about the murder.
There is still no clear information about who the mastermind of the murder was and what the motive behind it was.
Police had primarily identified Akhteruzzaman Shahin as the mastermind of the murder, saying he hired hitmen for Tk5 crore to execute the murder mission.
However, the involvement of some local leaders of the Jhenaidah Awami League in the murder surfaced later. Many suspected that district AL General Secretary Saidul Karim Mintu, also a political rival of MP Azim, might be involved in the murder plot.
Media reports earlier suggested that Azim might have been killed over gold smuggling. However, the arrest of Mintu over the murder has added a new layer of complexity to the issue -- has the MP been murdered over political rivalry as Mintu also sought AL nomination for participating in the last general election from Jhenaidah-4 (Kaliganj) constituency from where Azim was elected MP.
Even if the MP was murdered over gold smuggling, whether any smuggler from Kolkata was involved remained unanswered.
Nothing could be known yet about what happened to Azim's belongings -- clothes, shoes and handsets.
A video clip of the lawmaker going to Kolkata through Darshana Land Port in Chuadanga has also provoked questions -- who made the video and spread it on social media?
In another video, it was seen that a person was accompanying Azim in a red private car after he came out of the residence of his friend Gopal Biswas in Kolkata. There is no answer to who the person inside the car was and who filmed the video of the car.
There are also inconsistencies in the description of the dismemberment of the body of the MP after the murder.
Police sometimes said the body was sliced into keema and sometimes it was said that the body was cut into small pieces. It was also said that the body was cut into 80 pieces, raising questions about the accurate information.
Immediately after the news of the killing spread around, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal informed the mass media that all the killers were Bangladeshis and no Indian had any involvement in the crime.
Besides, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun Or Rashid told reporters at a press briefing that the mastermind of the murder was Akhteruzzaman Shahin.
In the briefing, he had said Syed Amanullah alias Shimul Bhuiyan led the killing mission on the orders of Shahin.
On 6 June night, the DB detained Jhenaidah district AL's Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Kazi Kamal Ahmed Babu alias 'Gas Babu' over the murder. Later, he was shown arrested in the case filed on charges of abduction of the MP for killing.
Upon information gleaned from him, the detectives detained Mintu from the capital's Dhanmondi area on Tuesday.
He was shown arrested in the case on Thursday and put on an eight-day remand for interrogation.
According to the police, Smimul Bhuiyan sent the photos of the body of the MP to the WhatsApp numbers of Babu and Mintu after the murder.
They also met at Bhanga in Faridpur on 16 or 17 May. There was reportedly a transaction of Tk2 crore between the trio.
According to the DB, Celesty Rahman was the only woman involved in the killing.
However, the involvement of six models, including a heroine, has now surfaced.
There is also confusion about the location of the murder plot. Sometimes it was said the plot was hatched in Dhaka while it was also said that the plot was made in Kolkata.
On 12 May, MP Azim went to Kolkata in the name of treatment. The following day, he was killed at a flat in Sanjeeva Gardens in New Town.
