Congress Priyanka Gandhi is set contest in India's national elections for the first time and could very well join the parliament with her brother Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi.

Even though she is a debutant in elections, Priyanka's winning chances are very high due to the historic popularity of Congress at Wayanad, and the victory would see three from the Gandhi family at India's parliament potentially for the first time.

Priyanka would contest in by-polls to the Wayanad seat in southern state of Kerala after Rahul vacates it.

Rahul, India's opposition leader, won two seats in the recently ended national elections, but, as per law, can retain onle one of these.

The party on a Monday meeting decided to keep him at the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Prades, and field Priyanka for the Wayanad seat, ending years of anticipation among Priyanka fans.

Notably, India's parliament has two houses: Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, the latter subject to general votes. Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka's mother, is a lawmaker of the upper house Rajya Sabha.

Congress support in Wayanad

Rahul Gandhi had scripted a huge victory in the Wayanad constituency for the second consecutive tenure with a margin of 3,64,422 votes over his nearest rival Annie Raja of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

While Rahul clinched 6,47,445 votes, Annie Raja received 2,83,023 votes and BJP candidate K Surendran came in third position with 1,41,045 votes. Rahul had won the 2019 lower house elections from Wayanad with a record majority of 4,31,770 votes.

The Wayanad constituency has supported the Congress party since its inception in 2009, and the record puts Priyanka as the top candidate. The CPI is not backing down and has already announced it would field a candidate to pre-empt a rise in BJP's vote share.
