Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said on Tuesday that they were planning to arrange a rooftop gardening exhibition in November.

He said this while addressing a meeting on the preparation of a guideline regarding giving tax rebates to building owners who have a rooftop garden at Gulshan-2 Nagar Bhaban in the capital.

Mayor Atiqul said, “Dhaka does not have enough space for gardens or agriculture, and for that reason, rooftops can be a great option for agriculture. There is a chance of getting fresh fruits and vegetables from the gardens and reducing the temperature. Gardening can also play a role in protecting the agricultural environment and preserving biodiversity.”

He said that the DNCC would arrange an exhibition on rooftop agriculture to encourage rooftop cultivation.

“I announced a 10% tax rebate for rooftop gardens. Following our proposal, the ministry has approved a tax exemption on planned roof gardens for all city corporations. A guideline is being formulated with experts for fixing the eligibility of gardeners for getting tax rebates,” Atiqul added.

Speaking at the event, journalist Shykh Seraj said, “If the city corporation gives a tax rebate on rooftop agriculture, it will be an honour for the city dwellers. The initiative to arrange an exhibition on rooftop farming is also a great initiative. I would request the city corporation to take the initiative as an area-wise exhibition on rooftop agriculture.”

Chief Executive Officer of DNCC Mir Khairul Alam, Secretary Mohammed Masud Alam Siddique, and Director (Horticulture) of the Department of Agricultural Extension K J M Abdul Awal were present at the event, among others.
